An Open Mind
I have not been on the same page with a lot of people this week, and it feels uncomfortable. An article written by a woman fascinated with some Mormon womens' blogs has been provoking varying responses among Mormon bloggers. Here's the article, if you're in the mood to read it. A few of my friends have posted the article and asked opinions about it. I don't like it because I don't like feeling like "my people" are under a microscope, being examined scientifically in academia. I've never liked generalizations, even though I know they help us make sense of the world. The good thing about seeing that I dislike the article, whereas many people appreciate the good in the article (or like that it questions Mormon womens' sincerity) is that I can examine whether I am shutting down, rather than seeing the validity of other peoples' opinions. I can develop an open mind to differing opinions. So it's good for me to be on the other side of an opinion, if only because it invites me to listen carefully, and not just stubbornly dig my heels in.
Our Family History
We put our house on the market last Saturday, if you think sticking a "For Sale" sign in the front yard is putting your house on the market. The only interest we have generated came from a realtor trying to sell a house across the street. He wanted to know what we were asking, and invited us to raise the price, so it was closer to the price being asked for his house. Nice guy:).
Doug's main birthday present was a ticket to the BYU/San Diego State basketball game this next Wednesday, so we'll take a whirlwind trip to Utah from Wednesday to Thursday for that. It'll be a light grading week for me, so this seems like good timing. Doug starts his new job on January 31st, and I hope it is an amazing experience for him.
I'm kind of amazed at the soccer ball forming in my belly. I love sucking in and looking at my profile in the mirror, because I can perfectly see the little circular house around my precious 1-pound baby. I look forward to getting my maternity clothes from Peanut's house, and hope they're cuter than I remember.
Isaac gives the most sincere-sounding, heartfelt apologies I've ever heard in my life. If I let him know I was disappointed that he fussed during Stake Conference (an example from earlier today), he says, "I am so, so sorry, Mom. I'll never be fussy again." It's automatic for him to apologize, and Lucy usually chimes in as well. Isaac has been working through a Kindergarten workbook with me since the fall, and he's done pretty well. But the boy has a block on "S's." They are backward almost every single time. And he has to write them every day, because I have him sign each page with his name. I've tried bribery recently, and I think I'll use play dough soon and see if I have some success. Ideas?
Lucy loves sashaying through our house looking "SO pretty!" She's currently wearing a princess t-shirt that lights up, and would have preferred wearing her tu-tu on bottom, though she acquiesced to the pants with hearts on them. She likes to wear a tiara, bracelets, necklaces, and rings, and sings beautifully. She likes to tell us she's "in trouble" when she doesn't want to do something we ask, and she still asks for hugs constantly, which means she wants us to pick her up and hug her. Her most recent, funny expression is "I'm okay" right after she slips and falls. She assured us that she was okay twice during Stake Conference, and made a lot of people laugh around us, because the falls or slips were so slight. She knows we care, so she does her job to let us know everything is fine.
Doug and I are exploring options to aggressively tackle our law school debt, and we're also trying to plan and save for a small getaway during April. Things are good.

Please keep me. I love it
Please, please keep me! I know I don't comment, but I love to check on how your babies are growing. You are so blessed. My email is spackmanhome (at) gmail (dot) com.
And it's OK to disagree bout the Mormon Mommy blogs article - it isn't a moral issue. I thought it was thought-provoking. I totally disagreed with her, but I found it fascinating. Love you!
You'd better keep me or I won't let you live near us :) Glad to see things are going well! Good luck with your "aggressive" house selling ;) And yay again for another girl!
I'd be sad if you didn't keep me... also, I had a lock on the letter K, which was unfortunate because it was in my name too. Nothing like a K backwards.
Just be patient, he'll get it without bribery. I remember tracing my mom's handwriting over and over because I really liked writing- at some point it just clicked. I might have been in kindergarten when it did too... (I remember panicking about three things before I started school- writing my Ks, tying my shoes, and playing with the other kids.)
Keep me as well! I love reading your blog. :)

Keep me, please. And congrats on the baby!
Sorry...I tried to comment, but then accidentally deleted it. I'd like to stay on the list, please! I love your blog, and I love what a girly-girl Lucy is turning into. It's okay...she can be a tomboy princess! There's still time! :) Your relationship with Isaac is so precious...I love reading about it. I think I had J's backwards until the first grade.
Oh, and I agree with you about keeping an open mind when hearing other people's opinions. They are nice starting points to re-examine my own feelings on issues, but I try not to take them personally. I read that article you were talking about...I don't think it struck me one way or the other. Funny it actually got published. Not really ground-breaking or controversial subject matter..."Mormon Moms." I guess it's always fun to look at how other people live.
Yup, I actually read it, the page loads more consistently than you pick up your phone ;) I'm actually really kidding, you've greatly improved in your phone-pickup skills, you've moved up the Sheide Annual Rankings to #2 right behind Peanut. Troy & Marsh are vying for who wins the bottom slot these days.
And just read that article...sad, really. Sounds like many of the women I went to college with (and some men). Over-educated morons, pompous & condescending in their Godless world, all the while wondering what that empty feeling inside is. Then when they find themselves attracted to the answer, their pride makes them automatically dismiss the obvious answer. It's ok though, things are swinging in the right direction these days, there's an awakening I sense all around the country. Good times ahead... Thanks for sharing the link & article.
Bless you, Chris, for your input:). And for letting me move up to #2. That would be really impressive, if we weren't dealing with Sheides here:). When are you coming out to play?

One trick for the S is to cut some sandpaper into the shape of an S and have him trace it with his finger several times. The sandy side helps him to recognize which direction the letter should be, and hopefully tracing it with his finger several times will get him in the habit of knowing which side to begin and end an S.
Can I be kept on. I love reading your blog. ktrandy.tuck@gmail.com
As for Isaac, he'll get it, he's got plenty of time. When he does get it, it will be an Ah ha/ lightbulb on, kind of a moment.
Have fun at the game tonight. I heard it's gonna be a good one. Randy's got school and is DVRing it so he can watch it tomorrow. I doubt he will though cuz he'll find out the score before he gets a chance and then he just won't be able to watch it after that, lol.
I'm interested in reading that article, sounds intriguing.
I hope you already know that I want to keep reading as I am an avid commenter. :) my email is embarassingly: jthesavage@gmail.com
