Oh Boy

It's day two of being a working mommy and let me just tell you that I'm feeling a bit frazzled. It's okay, but it's something new that consumes my mind--hence, frazzlage. I need to figure out something better than letting Isaac watch shows while I'm on the computer and Lucy's napping. I just feel too guilty. Maybe half an hour of self-directed play and then he can watch a show? When it gets warmer, he can play in the backyard while I work? What do you all do to help kids have a great life when you're distracted?

Also, if there was ever any question of whether or not I am qualified for the job I just got, I'm (um, pleased?) to announce that I am the least qualified new teacher for BYU Idaho. In our training, we make bios so people get a sense of who we are and what we have done professionally and academically and suffice it to say that every single person (there are 39 of us) has at least 5 years more teaching experience than I do... Plus they're written books and gotten PhD's and organized women's organizations and been church escorts on trips to Israel.

So does that mean I got the job based on charm and the spirit (and yes, Jessica, my itty bitty amount of online teaching and class experience)? It is a gift to be able to teach for BYU Idaho from my home and I don't ever want to take it for granted. And hey, if I keep teaching for the next five years, I'll be tied with the least experienced members of the BYU Idaho faculty!
I posted my engagement photo because it makes me happy.

Well, at least you can put Professor down on any future bios you ever have to write. I think it is so cool that you get to do this.

Also, my kids are learning spanish and mandarin on Nick Jr these days. They also really enjoy their Wii time. I am relieved to know that if my boys ever encounter any of Batman's foes in Lego form they will be well trained with the survival skills they have picked up in their hours of training with Wii Lego Batman.

So many essential life skills can come from the television. Maybe you can turn on the food network or a Julia Child show and have Isaac prepare dinner while you work. I'm just saying...

Yeah, I had that same inadequate feeling at the BYU music program. Finally, after I graduated, I realized they accepted me because I deserved to be there, even though I hadn't won any national competitions. Anyway, you are obviously qualified, or else you wouldn't have been hired. And, as your unofficial-morally obligated-completely unqualified editor, I say you are awesome.

I've tried a lot of different things with Laralyn while I taught, and the best ever is a mother's helper. At first I felt like I was a slacker mom pawning my child's raising to a 12 year old. Then I realized it's only for an hour or so a day, and I'm just in the next room for disasters, and it's really cheap compared to a regular babysitter. Plus, the little one thinks the babysitter is her best friend, and talks about her all the time.

Wish I had a good answer for you. I let Maddy watch t.v. even when I'm not busy with other stuff. There are some days I can't face the hours of playdough and painting and so I let Maddy find a playmate in the Backyardigans....So if you figure it out, let me know.

Well, I feel totally guilty letting my 14 month old watch TV ever since he gave up the morning nap. He gets soooo fussy around 10 am and we usually just can't deal with it and turn on the TV for 40 minutes of peace. I was hoping I wasn't the only mother out there letting her child watch TV. Granted, Isaac is two years older than Lewis, so you are much more justified.

No guilt! No guilt! No guilt! There are tons of great shows kids can watch---seriously, Little Einsteins know more than I do :) And Mommy needs time to do her thing, even if her "thing" is working at home. No worries, Tara! And as for their experience, so what---you are "fresh"! And like Allie said, you'll always get to put "professor" down on your resume. cool!
