Sister Bowen's Top 20 Values

One of the assignments my students needed to do last week was write a list of their top 20 values. Their lists and explanations were so inspiring, and so I made my own list. So here it is. Note that we use "I am" statements to inspire better behavior--I'm not really "there" yet--I'm in the "becoming" process.

Sister Bowen's Top 20 Values:

1) Faith: I believe in God, in the Plan of Salvation, and I believe that through the atonement of Jesus Christ, I can be cleansed of my sins, and have eternal life. I live my life now based on my faith that I can live with my family forever. Life is not fair, but eternal life is more than fair.

2) Devotion: I am devoted to my spouse, my children, my parents, my siblings, extended family, and friends. They mean more to me than any "thing" on earth, and I show them my love every chance I get.

3) Moral Agency: I honor the truths I have learned by the choices I make. This includes having and raising my family, serving faithfully in the church, and sacrificing what I want for the God I love even more that my wants. I have seen the spiritual power springing from obedience in my life, and I obey God.

4) Love: My father-in-law likes to say "Love is a verb." I love people, and they deserve to be loved.

5) Kindness: I really look at people, rather than looking through them to the tasks I do each day. I am kind because Heavenly Father gave me a chance to be kind to every person I see.

6) Potential: I know I am not yet the person I want to be, and I will probably always feel that way. But I will live a life that is good--I will make a positive difference in the world.

7) Gratitude: I am grateful for every day I have to live life more fully, and grow toward God. I am vocal about my gratitude! Even if I only feel grateful for "food, shelter, clothing, and my family" some days, that is an awful lot to be grateful for. I express my gratitude every day.

8) Light: I embrace everything that is "of good report and praiseworthy, and seek after these things." I look for the good in everyone, and look for the goodness in the world today. It strengthens me.

9) Time management: I do what matters most. I have a plan every day so I can do what I should do/would like to do. I live by the "Good, Better, Best" talk Elder Oaks gave in 2007.

10) Honesty: I am truthful. Always. I am still working on how to be truthful without complaining or sounding negative.

11) Dependability: I meet my deadlines, and I am there when I say I will be there. If something unexpected happens, and I can't keep a commitment, I will work to resolve the issue.

12) Dreams: I dream of writing a novel that inspires young people--it will be my magnum opus. To write that book, I will continue to write every day, read every day, submit my work according to yearly goals I set, and I will set aside time to dream and contemplate, so I can inspire people like I have been inspired.

13) Teach: I always work to be a better teacher, and to teach with love.

14) One-on-One Time: I focus on the one, and make sure to have special one-on-one time with my spouse and children every day. I also seek to connect with other family members and friends one-on-one, and I do this in teaching through church callings, and BYU-I.

15) Heroes: I learn from my heroes, and help my children discover their heroes.

16) Health: I try to eat healthy things, and I try to limit the sweets and goodies. This gives me confidence in my ability to overcome all my other challenges. I also work out because it makes me happy, and I love being strong and active.

17) Creativity: I am creative, and it means I am always thinking! I love figuring out how to have a "win/win/win/win" experience with my kids on our daily adventures, and I love writing and finding ways to improve situations/papers. I hope to be creative for the rest of my life.

18) Dancing and Playing: I dance and play every day. I adore dancing with my spouse, and it is fun to dance and play with my kids. When I play with people, they know I love them, and it so nice to have fun every day!

19) Adventures: I go on adventures every day, and decide to have fun on "errands'' because life is about living, not about "drudgery." I sing when I work, and play music to enhance daily tasks.

20) Records: I make a record of my thoughts, and of the things that happen in my family so my children will treasure our memories, and so we can pass these memories down. I preserve our memories. I will post this values list on my blog as part of our family record:).

I like your list. I like your goal of writing a book and think that is very doable for you, since you are a great writer. I always feel like I should be able to write a book, but alas I think I am only a good reader, not a good writer.
I also understand the honesty thing and not wanting to come out negative or mean etc. Lastly, you were right about your comment on my blog. Unfortunately I think I am beginning to see that I have larger issues than just blogging insecurity ha!

I love this! And I can see so many of those values already instilled in you.
